The idea of building Stenens Hus in Hunnebostrand in Sotenäs municipality is now being revived.

Newly formed foundation aims for a Stone House in Sotenäs

The idea of creating a place and building a visitor centre with the stone in focus at Udden in Hunnebostrand was born just over ten years ago. It came about after criticism of plans to build residential buildings in the area.

Since then, the seafront promenade has developed into a sculpture park with a strong appeal to both locals and visitors. An early idea for a ‘House of Stone’ gained new momentum in 2017, and a concept study three years later found strong support for a building on the site, a centre that highlights the historical significance of stone, its beauty and future possibilities.

‘Opinions differ on what it should look like,’ says Kjell Andersson, a member of the Collection Foundation’s board. ‘But the message from repeated citizen dialogues is clear: if Sweden is to have a place that tells the story of the history of stone and stone handling and of its importance for sustainable construction in the future, it is at Udden in Hunnebostrand. And nowhere else.’

In the same spirit, a fundraising foundation is now being set up with the aim of organising an architectural competition and developing methods for raising sufficient capital to build a ‘House for Stone’, Stenens Hus.
